Admissions tests remain one of the most underappreciated aspects of competitive university applications. Strong performance is often the single most important factor in determining whether a student is shortlisted for interview or receives an offer.

Current admissions tests
The following tests are currently in use for 2027/28 university entry. Select a test to learn more about what it covers and which courses require it.
Used by Cambridge for Engineering and Natural Sciences courses. The ESAT assesses advanced mathematical and scientific reasoning through problem-solving questions designed to test how students approach unfamiliar concepts.
Relevant Courses
Used by Cambridge for History applicants. The HAA evaluates a student's ability to analyse historical arguments, interpret sources, and construct clear written responses under timed conditions.
Relevant Courses
Used by Cambridge for applicants to Human, Social and Political Sciences. It assesses analytical reasoning, critical reading, and the ability to evaluate arguments on social and political topics.
Relevant Courses
The IMAT is used by universities in Italy and other European medical schools that teach Medicine in English. It assesses scientific knowledge, logical reasoning, and problem-solving in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics.

Required for Law at universities including Oxford, UCL, and others. The LNAT assesses critical reading, logical reasoning, and the ability to analyse complex arguments and write a structured essay.

Discontinued / Legacy tests
These tests have been discontinued or replaced. Students who sat these tests in previous years may still find this information useful for reference.
The BMSAT was previously used by some universities for Biomedical Sciences admissions. It assessed scientific knowledge and problem-solving ability across core science disciplines. Many institutions have since moved to alternative admissions assessments.
